CHANCELLOR WILLIAMS (1905- ) was born in South Carolina and attended the elementary school there before moving to Washington, D.C., where he graduated from Howard University, B.A., 1930; M.A., (1935); Ph.D., American University (1940). While Visiting Research Scholar, Lincoln College, Oxford University (1953-1954) he continued studies of sociological and educational problems of Africa; in 1956-1957, attached to the University College of Ghana, he carried out field studies in the country, which included a community study, a national opinion poll, in 143 schools and colleges. A member of the faculty of Howard University since 1945, he also serves as Visiting Professor of Sociology and Education. Tuskegee Institute (Summer Sessions). Author of such works as THE RAVEN (historical work on Poe, 1943), HAVE YOU BEEN TO THE RIVER? (novelized version of doctoral dissertation: THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC STATUS OF STORE-FRONT CHURCH MOVEMENT IN THE UNITED STATES). He edited THE NEW CHALLENGE, and THE PRINCIPALS ANALYZE THEIR TASK (a research publication), and has contributed to JOURNAL OF NEGRO EDUCATION, THE SOCIAL STUDIES, etc.
